Biography

Hi, my name is Amy Kelley. First and foremost, I am a wife and a mother of four children. I enjoy learning new things. I love to teach, cook, sing, play the piano, serve in my church, read, crochet, organize, create, exercise, clean and work in the yard. I love to spend time with my family and friends, especially going to our family cabin and playing games.

I have worked in the early childhood development field since 1992. I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education in 1994. I worked as a consultant for six years for a Clinical Social Worker in private practice specifically addressing child development issues of children involved in custody battles. In 1998, I opened my own preschool. Since that time, I have worked with many children and parents to develop a lifelong love of learning in each child.

Philosophy

I believe children learn best through play. Studies support this idea and recognize that children do not automatically learn complex ideas through play. They gain implicit knowledge when they are allowed to play on their own, however teachers who help guide the child’s play, giving language and structure to concepts, actually help the child develop explicit (comprehensive, concrete) knowledge. Each child gains cognitive skills necessary for academic work by playing with blocks, dressing up, creating art, counting cookies, singing, and pretending to read or recognizing letters in the alphabet. There is an old adage that says, play is a child’s work. At Imagine Preschool, we work hard every day to develop the skills we need to succeed in life.

Each day, my preschool activities encourage learning through play and the development of imagination. We perform science experiments, practice counting, make art projects, practice each letter and sound of the alphabet; we take turns, we help each other and practice being the leader. We use guided play techniques that keep each child on task and learning every minute. We ask questions, predict, and find out about new concepts and explore the wonders and beauty of the world.

I strongly believe in developmentally appropriate practices and implement them in my preschool and curriculum. It was Albert Einstein who said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited, but imagination encircles the world." I believe that. I believe that creativity, imagination, and ingenuity are characteristics that can solve problems. I have developed a curriculum specifically for my preschool that incorporates these characteristics mixed with academics and socialization to help each child strengthen and develop their very best self.

Be Rules

At Imagine Preschool, positive reinforcement is used to encourage children to be their best! We follow and implement the following "Be Rules" so each child can learn to be in charge of themselves.

Daily Schedule

When your child arrives at Imagine Preschool they come in and put their coat and backpack on their very own hook. They come in and sit down on their very own carpet piece. They participate in an arrival activity and chat with Miss Amy until everyone arrives.

Each day your child will participate in learning the letter of the day, practicing its name, sound, and what words begin with that letter. Your child will practice handwriting and work on holding the pencil properly with strong fingers. After your child completes their work, they can choose one or more activities to participate in during free choice. This is child directed dramatic play, sensory experience or arts & crafts.

After clean up, your child participates in story and snack. Then your child will work on an art or science project pertaining to the letter of the day. After clean up, your child will gather their coat and backpack and head on out to outdoor play. When outdoor play is over, your child is reminded of the things they have learned that day and what they can look forward to for next time. Your child is then escorted out to you and it’s time to go home!
